Christmastime with little kids is magical for so many reasons. With three little guys in our home, this time of year feels almost electric.
My kids absolutely love when their elves return, and have so much fun welcoming them back. I’ve been really surprised just how much they believe these little magical creatures keep tabs on their behavior.
Last year we began a weekly official elf report, and today I wanted to share these free printable elf report cards for you to use with your own family, too.

Understanding the Elf on the Shelf Tradition
Never had an elf before? In a nutshell, this beloved tradition involves a special elf sent from the North Pole to watch over families and report back to Santa each night on behavior. If you haven’t gotten an elf yet, you can order one here on Amazon, here at Target, or here at Walmart.
The Elf on the Shelf is more than just a cute decoration for our home. It’s a fun way to encourage good behavior and create lasting memories with our children using Santa’s little helpers. The tradition is all about bringing a little more magic and wonder to the holiday season and my kids love it (and it really does feel like it amplifies the magic of Christmas for young children, too).
Santa’s scout elves arrive after Thanksgiving (in our home we usually do December 1st), and each morning the kids search for them as they move during the night. Their squeals of delight each morning as they discover them in a new silly place are one of my very favorite things!
To fully embrace the Elf on the Shelf tradition, it’s important to understand the rules. The elf should be given a name and a special spot in your home where it can watch over your family. Each night, the elf will fly back to the North Pole to report good deeds to Santa, and return to a new spot in your home the next morning.
The elves return home with Santa on Christmas Eve (and you can use a Free Printable Elf Goodbye Letters from your Elf on the Shelf). We love this Christmas tradition!

The Christmas elf is always watching, and is a reminder to kids that they need to be on their best behavior. The elf can’t speak or move while humans are awake, but it’s always watching and listening. It’s important to follow the Elf on the Shelf rules and be kind, helpful and respectful.
The printable elf report cards are a small reminder of the things the elf is looking out for, and can be customized for your own family. This collection includes seven different printable elf reports available for download. Five of the files are elf report cards/elf reports. Four of those have space for you to write in specific behaviors, while one is prefilled in case you don’t have time (or would prefer not to).
There’s also a “keep up the good work” report (to reinforce the good behavior you’re seeing) and a bright red official elf warning (letting your child know that Santa has heard they aren’t doing their best, but there’s still time to make a change to end up on Santa’s nice list this year). These two are a great way to spotlight behavior you want to continue seeing, or behavior that needs some work.
The official elf reports even have an “Official North Pole/Santa” seal of approval, so kids know that it’s the real deal!
These elf reports are designed to be printed on a standard 8.5×11 inch piece of paper or cardstock.

This file contains seven different free elf report cards to choose from:
- Customizable General Elf Report Card (4): This general report card is great for the elf on the shelf to leave out for your kids at any time. There are two vertical and two horizontal ones to choose from. All have space for you to fill in your child’s name, what their elf has observed, whether the elf feels they have been naughty or nice, and a space for the elf to sign their name.
- Prefilled General Elf Report Card (1): This general elf report card is similar to the other four, but instead of blank spaces to write in behaviors, this one comes with a few prefilled ones to make it even simpler. Behaviors include helps around the home, treats others with kindness, respects parents, doesn’t fight bedtime and cleans up after self.
- Good Behavior Elf Report Card (1): This printable report card is designed to acknowledge exceptionally good behavior. At the bottom of this printable elf report card it has an extra note that reads “This report has been sent to Santa Claus, and he has been notified of your good behavior. Keep up the good work!”
- Bad Behaviors Warning Elf Report Card (1): All kids struggle with bad behavior sometimes. This official elf report card is a warning report card designed for those times when your kids need some extra motivation. With a bright red warning label, this official elf report includes a note that says “Santa Claus has been notified of this warning. There’s still time to change your behavior if you would like to be on his nice list this year.”
I recommend printing these elf report cards on plain white paper, but you can also use construction paper, white cardstock or another type of thick paper. Just choose the elf on the shelf report card you want to use! You can print this file out again and again for different reports, too. Don’t forget to add your elf’s name!
